Russia’s Vladimir Putin, Beneath Stress Over Ukraine Warfare, Turns to Acquainted Escalation Playbook

MOSCOW—Confronted by critical battlefield losses in Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin did what he has typically performed earlier than when dealing with setbacks: doubled down.

In a nationally televised speech early Wednesday, an angry-sounding Mr. Putin stated he would name up 300,000 reservists to bolster the battle effort and hinted he would consider a nuclear strike, saying he would use “all of the devices at his disposal” to prevail.
