Tsunami warning as magnitude 7 quake strikes Solomon Islands

WELLINGTON, New Zealand — A strong magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck close to the Solomon Islands Tuesday afternoon, triggering a tsunami warning.

There have been no rapid experiences of widespread injury or accidents.

The quake’s epicenter was within the ocean about 56 kilometers (35 miles) southwest of the capital, Honiara, at a depth of 13 kilometers (8 miles), in accordance with the USA Geological Survey.
